Introduction: The Importance of Time Management
Welcome to today’s lesson. One of the key factors that can make or break your performance in the TOEFL iBT Reading section is time management. With a limited amount of time and a plethora of passages to read, it’s crucial to have a solid strategy in place. In this video, I’ll be sharing 10 tips that will help you effectively manage your time and tackle the questions with confidence. So, let’s dive in!
1. Skim the Passage First
When you first encounter a passage, resist the temptation to read every word meticulously. Instead, adopt a skimming technique. This involves quickly glancing through the passage, paying attention to the main ideas, topic sentences, and any highlighted or bolded text. Skimming helps you get an overall understanding of the passage, which can be immensely helpful when answering the questions.
2. Identify the Question Types
Not all questions in the TOEFL iBT Reading section are the same. There are various question types, such as main idea, detail, inference, and vocabulary. By familiarizing yourself with these question types, you’ll know what to expect and how to approach each one. This saves you time, as you won’t have to spend precious minutes deciphering the question’s requirements.
3. Read the Questions First
Before diving into the passage, take a few moments to read the questions related to it. This gives you a roadmap of what to look for while reading. You’ll be able to identify the relevant information more efficiently, rather than aimlessly scanning the entire passage. It’s a simple yet effective strategy that can significantly speed up your reading process.
4. Use Keywords
Keywords are like signposts in a passage. They guide you to the relevant information. When reading the passage, keep an eye out for keywords mentioned in the questions. These can be specific terms, names, dates, or even synonyms of the words used in the questions. By focusing on these keywords, you’ll be able to locate the answers more quickly.
5. Don’t Get Stuck on Difficult Questions
In the TOEFL iBT Reading section, time is of the essence. If you encounter a particularly challenging question, don’t let it consume all your time. Instead, make a mental note of it, and move on to the next one. You can always come back to it later if you have time left. Remember, every question carries the same weightage, so it’s better to answer as many as possible.
6. Practice Speed Reading
Speed reading is a skill that can be developed with practice. The more you expose yourself to different texts and consciously work on increasing your reading speed, the better you’ll become at it. There are various online resources and apps that can help you in this regard. By improving your reading speed, you’ll be able to cover more ground in the given time.

7. Use the Elimination Technique
Sometimes, even if you’re not sure about the correct answer, you can eliminate the obviously wrong options. This increases your chances of selecting the right answer, even if it’s a guess. The elimination technique is particularly useful in multiple-choice questions, where you have to choose from a set of options.

8. Manage Your Time Wisely
Divide your time strategically among the passages. For example, if you have 3 passages to read and 60 minutes in total, allocate around 20 minutes to each passage. This way, you’re ensuring that you’re not spending too much time on one passage and neglecting the others. Keep an eye on the clock and adjust your pace accordingly.
9. Take Advantage of the Passage Structure
Passages in the TOEFL iBT Reading section often follow a specific structure, such as cause and effect, problem and solution, or chronological order. By understanding this structure, you can anticipate the flow of information and make connections between different parts of the passage. This enhances your comprehension and helps you answer the questions more accurately.
10. Review and Check for Errors
If you have time left after answering all the questions, don’t just sit idle. Use this time to review your answers and double-check for any errors. Sometimes, in the rush to complete, we make simple mistakes or misinterpret the questions. By reviewing, you’re minimizing the chances of such errors and ensuring the accuracy of your responses.
