These are examples of gaps.

Today, we’re going to learn about the word gap and how to use it correctly in your IELTS exam.

Word type: Gap is primarily used as a noun, but it can also function as a verb in certain contexts.

Meaning: A gap is a space or opening between two things or in something. It can also refer to a difference or disparity between two groups or situations.

Word history: The word gap comes from Old Norse, an ancient Scandinavian language. It originally meant an opening or chasm.

Synonyms: Some words that mean something similar to gap are space, opening, hole, break, or interval.

Antonyms: Words that mean the opposite of gap include closure, connection, or continuity.

Examples use in sentences: Let’s look at how we can use gap in different situations.

First, a physical gap. There was a small gap between the door and the floor, allowing a cold draft to enter the room.

Next, a gap in time. I have a two-hour gap between my morning and afternoon classes, which I use to study.

We can also use gap to talk about differences. There is a significant gap between the rich and the poor in many countries.

In a more abstract sense: The new employee quickly identified gaps in the company’s security system.

Common errors in use: Be careful not to confuse gap with gape. Gape means to stare with your mouth open in surprise or wonder.

Also, remember that we usually say fill a gap or bridge a gap, not close a gap, unless we’re talking about a physical space that can actually be closed.

To wrap up, a gap is a space or difference between things. It’s a versatile word that can be used in many contexts, from describing physical spaces to talking about abstract concepts like knowledge or wealth differences.

Practice using gap in your speaking and writing to become more comfortable with it. Remember, recognizing and using words like gap correctly can help improve your IELTS score.

Understanding ‘Gap’: Boost Your IELTS Vocabulary Learn the meaning, usage, and importance of the word ‘gap’ for your IELTS exam.
