VSTEP B1, B2, C1 Speaking Part 2: Solution Discussion

- Question:

A friend is considering a career change. Would you recommend freelancing, starting their own business, or retraining in a new field?

- Answer:

I would recommend retraining in a new field. A career change often implies dissatisfaction with the current line of work, and merely changing the work structure (like freelancing) or increasing responsibility (like starting a business) might not address the underlying issue.

Freelancing and starting a business both come with their own unique challenges, including uncertainty of income, intense competition, and administrative burdens. They also require a strong existing skill set and network.

Retraining in a new field, on the other hand, allows for exploration of different interests or passions, and can lead to a career that is more fulfilling. It provides the opportunity to acquire new skills and knowledge, which can lead to personal growth and enhance career prospects.

Although retraining may take time and resources, the long-term payoff can be significant if it leads to a career that is more aligned with the individual's interests, skills, and life goals. Thus, I believe retraining in a new field would be the most beneficial option for a career change.
