hear + Ving or hear + V?

1. I heard the telephone ring and then John answered it 2. I heard the telephone ringing at the time i came One of them is incorrect or both are correct? Please help me

Both are correct. In the first sentence you heard the whole action, from the moment the telephone started ringing until John answered it. In the second one, you only heard the telephone ringing when you came; you didn't hear it ring from start to finish; the phone was already ringing when you came.
