What is the difference between northern and the north?

When we use "northern" and "the north" please?

Look at the following sentences:

1. I live in the north of Canada.
2. I live in the northern Canada.

The sentence #2 is incorrect. It should be

I live in northern Canada.

So, We use "the north of" and "northern" without "the" and "of"
