Hello. I am translating a medical text from English to another language. I faced this word and need somebody to help me: "community dwelling elderly". What kind of elderly is this!!? Do other elderlies not live in the community? So who are community dwellings?

the community-dwelling elderly = old people who live in the community on their own as opposed to those taken care of in nursing homes

Old people who live in the community ( = the local community) on their own ( = without anybody's help) in their own private homes, as opposed to those (who are) taken care of in nursing homes.
