This is another case of the subjunctive mood, the so-called "past" subjunctive. The past subjunctive has the same form as the past indicative for all verbs except "be," which has the form "were" for all persons. It is used in conditionals and with "wish" in a formal style. In a less formal style, "was" can be used instead in the first and third person singular. Ex.: "If she were here, I would not be so lonely." "I wish she were here."
