the answer is WHAT!! but i chose THE PLACE WHERE! :( why what?

what = the thing(s) that; "where" is a relative adverb that replaces "there" in a relative clause. Ex.: "We went there." >> "That is (the place) where we went." In this case, "We visited there" is not possible because "visit" must be followed by a noun object, not an adverb, so "the place where" can't be used.
