How to use "learn about" and "learn of"

I give you 2 examples:
- When I lived in Japan 2 years ago. I learned a great deal about how to cook Japanese food.
- I learned of Mary's marriage in the newspaper yesterday.

So,
- We use "LEARN ABOUT" when we gain knowledge or information through our experience and effort.
- We use "LEARN OF" when we gain information indirectly or find out something without conscious effort. LEARN OF means to be informed of or to hear of.
